She's waiting at his locker the next morning, arms wrapped tight across her chest. He stops when he sees her, and she can't tell if the look on his face is more angry or hurt.

"Hey," she says.

"Hannah," he says, and it's certainly not the friendliest greeting she's ever heard. On the other hand, he hasn't told her to go to hell, and she wouldn't quite blame him if he did, so it could definitely be worse.

"Look, Sam, I really am sorry about what happened yesterday."

"So you keep saying. I don't even know what happened. I get that I did or said something wrong, but I don't know what."

"No, you didn't. I just . . . I freaked," she says.

"Over what?" he asks, opening his locker and shoving half the contents of his backpack into it.

"Just--it's hard to explain."

"I don't get you, Hannah. And I really want to."

"Maybe it's better if you don't."

"Don't what?" he asks "Get you or want to?"

"Either," she says. "Both. Sam, I am dealing with an insane amount of stuff right now, most of which barely makes sense to me. I can't . . . you're a nice guy--"

"Don't say it," he says. "Please."

"Don't say what?"

"Don't say, 'You're a nice guy, but . . .'"

Hannah sighs. "But you are a nice guy. And for some reason, you're interested in a girl who's-- I can't-- you deserve more than I could give you right now."

He shrugs, easily. "We're not on a schedule. I'll wait."

"That's really not fair. To either of us."

"Why not?"

"It's not fair to you because I think it's going to be a while. Maybe a long while. And it's not fair to me because that's more pressure than I can handle right now."

"'More pressure'?" he says, shutting the locker with slightly more force than is probably necessary. "'More pressure'? Hannah, I'm not trying to start a fight here, but I don't think I could possibly be putting less pressure on you without moving back to Kansas."

"I asked you out once, last year. I haven't done anything but try to be your friend since. Which isn't always easy; you shut people out a lot."

"I know. I--"

"And yesterday, all I did was ask a friend who looked tired if she wanted coffee. That's it. I'm not pursuing you or pushing you or trying to make your life harder. And yeah, I like you. I'm not going to lie about that. I like you a lot, and I'd like to know you better. But I haven't said or done anything about that in months. Because you told me not to. So I'm sorry, but if you're feeling some kind of pressure, it's not coming from me."

"Sam--" she begins, but then the bell rings.

"I have to get to homeroom," he says.

Hannah, watching him go, wonders if she has, after all, just been told to go to hell.

At this point, she doesn't think it would be that long a trip.
